Should I take over-the-counter medications before I get my vaccine?

While it may seem tempting to take medication such as ibuprofen (Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol), or antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and cetirizine (Zyrtec) prior to your COVID-19 vaccination in an attempt to prevent side effects, this is not recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Taking these medications before getting your immunization may hide symptoms of an allergic reaction. And if you’re having an allergic reaction, you will want to know about it as you may require medical intervention. Or, some reactions after your first dose may signal you’re not a good candidate to receive a second dose of vaccine. Talk with your health care provider with any concerns.
